`Vital Connections´ is a series of four watercolours through which I have sought to reflect how the mind’s emotions engage with the physical body, affecting our health and behaviour.
In their time, Freud and Lacan spoke about the ‘Symptoms of Drive’ and their psychosomatic phenomenon. The human being is a unit; our organs cannot be separated from our internal sensations. We usually ignore emotions and life experiences, whether positive or negative, when it comes to addressing the impact they have on our organism and yet they are the driving force that move us forward in life. The conscious exploration of the unconscious is not a paradox or a play on words: it makes us think what we should change, but sometimes we cannot dispense with obstacles or fragility to become ourselves. In the four watercolours, the dendrites, the blood vessels, the stains, the drops and the rivers of blood converge harmoniously with their own nature, transforming the process of each of the paintings into a substantial ritual where each neuronal structure, responsible for cellular communication, will warn us when something is not flowing in harmony with ourselves. Each sign is in its place (reds) and each drive is represented in yellows, oranges and pinks that explode inside us. The blood vessels, membranes and capillaries dilate and break rhythmically, inviting the spectator to reflect in order to find in sensitivity the cure to many of the things that affect us. |
